چکیده

Research in the domain of examination timetabling is moving towards developing methods that generalise well over a range of problems. This is achieved by implementing hyper-heuristic systems to find the best heuristic or heuristic combination to allocate examinations when constructing a timetable for a problem. Heuristic combinations usually take the form of a list of low-level heuristics that are applied sequentially. This study proposes an alternative representation for heuristic combinations, namely, a hierarchical combination of heuristics. Furthermore, the heuristics in each combination are applied simultaneously rather than sequentially. The study also introduces a new low-level heuristic, namely, highest cost. A set of heuristic combinations of this format have been tested on the 13 Carter benchmarks. The quality of the examination timetables induced using these combinations are comparable to, and in some cases better than, those produced by hyper-heuristic systems combining and applying heuristic combinations sequentially. 2008 Elsevier B.V. Evolving Hyper-Heuristics for a Highly Constrained Examination Timetabling Problem

A lot of research has been conducted on hyper-heuristics for examination timetabling. However, most of this work has been focused on an uncapacitated version of the problem. This study reports on evolving hyper-heuristics for a highly constrained version of the problem, namely, the set of problems from the second International Timetabling Competition (ITC ’07). Previous work has shown that usin...

A Genetic Programming Approach to the Generation of Hyper-Heuristics for the Uncapacitated Examination Timetabling Problem

Research in the field of examination timetabling has developed in two directions. The first looks at applying various methodologies to induce examination timetables. The second takes an indirect approach to the problem and examines the generation of heuristics or combinations of heuristics, i.e. hyper-heuristics, to be used in the construction of examination timetables. The study presented in t...

Evolving hyper-heuristics for the uncapacitated examination timetabling problem

This paper presents a genetic programming (GP) hyper-heuristic approach that optimizes a search space of functions to assess the difficulty of allocating an examination during the timetable construction process. Each function is a heuristic combination of lowlevel construction heuristics combined by logical operators. The approach is tested on a set of five benchmark problems of varying difficu...

A Reinforcement Learning - Great-Deluge Hyper-Heuristic for Examination Timetabling

Hyper-heuristics can be identified as methodologies that search the space generated by a finite set of low level heuristics for solving search problems. An iterative hyper-heuristic framework can be thought of as requiring a single candidate solution and multiple perturbation low level heuristics. An initially generated complete solution goes through two successive processes (heuristic selectio...

Perturbation based variable neighbourhood search in heuristic space for examination timetabling problem

Efficient constructive heuristics have been designed for most of the difficult combinatorial optimisation problems. Performance of these heuristics may vary from one instance to another and hence it is beneficial to be able to select an instance of the heuristic which is best suited to a given instance of the problem. Both of the heuristic search algorithm and hyper-heuristic approaches try to ...
